Did you know that ignoring a cavity could lead to damage in the center of your tooth? If this happens, there are only a few options you can consider, including tooth extraction or root canal therapy. Generally, we recommend saving your natural tooth whenever possible, but there are benefits to both procedures.

Our team recommends root canal therapy when your pulp is infected or inflamed, whether it was caused by a cavity or not. During root canal therapy, our team will remove the infected area and seal the tooth. This treatment actually saves your tooth, though you may need a crown to protect it from further damage. And since crowns are designed to match your natural teeth, your repaired tooth should blend beautifully in your smile.

Again, most dentists recommend root canal therapy—and saving your tooth—rather than suggesting tooth extraction. But tooth extraction is also an extremely useful treatment. For instance, our team could recommend removing a tooth if it has died, which can happen if you don’t have root canal therapy quickly enough. We may also recommend this treatment if your tooth is extremely fractured or if its structure is compromised. Fortunately, if a tooth is extracted, we can offer you a number of options to restore the function of your smile.

If you have more questions about either of these treatments, please don’t hesitate to give Transcend Dental a call at 484.369.8625. Dr. Jared Ayes and our team will be happy to examine your smile and offer you personalized advice. We’re excited to hear from you soon!
